I Have Seen Picard, I Have Opinions
So, we watched #Picard tonight (1st ep) and, surprising absolutely nobody, I Have Opinions.

(See, I can have critical thoughts about SF/F properties. They just generally aren’t #StarWars)
Picard got OLD. I appreciate this, though it is a privilege generally extended only to male characters/actors. It’s HARD for him to do the stairs. This is excellent, as it’s been 33 years since TNG premiered and Picard wasn’t implied to be a baby Captain then.

So, Old Jean-Luc meets with much approval. Also Number One, who is the best & most excellent canine companion. Riker should be pleased with his namesake.

The lush scenery in all the settings is amazing. The vineyard, Boston’s sprawl, the continued futurization of San Francisco.
Allison Pill as Dr. Jurati gets full marks.

Dahj. Dahj is full stop excellence.
“Tea, Earl Grey, Decaf.” Sir Stewart, you can place my tea order any time.#Picard
The alien boyfriend that they killed off (how refreshing that a BOY got killed off) was lovely and we should have had more than 2 minutes of his loveliness.

And oh look, perfect segue into Significant Spoiler Territory and the thing I am Mad About.
HERE BE MANY SPOILERS. YOU ARE WARNED.
HERE BE #SPOILERS. If you have not seen the first episode of #StarTrekPicard, please stop reading this and go watch it.

You’re back? Excellent.
WHY DID WE STUFF DAHJ IN THE FRIDGE????????????
Dahj and Picard could have made a wonderful father daughter partnership over the course of many seasons. Exploring her background, learning about who she was, transmitting his memories of Data.

Instead we get a Dramatic Explosion, motivation for Picard and a Mysterious Twin.
This is how I am feeling about that decision. pic.twitter.com/vxOzCliDXp

Otherwise, show has much promise. The thing with the Romulan caretakers is odd, but I’m guessing it’s a “you did your best to save our people, we want to swear fealty” type thing. The difference in both forehead construction and accent is a bit jarring.

@SirPatStew remains a wonderful actor and it is clear he is inhabiting a much loved role. It’s like a favorite coat and he is very happy to be wearing it.

Looking forward to watching the rest as it comes out!

Oh, other thing that is totally just a Me Thing.
— T Ash (@crewgrrl) February 1, 2020
Brent Spiner will always be Data. Brent Spiner is a human actor. Data is a robot. Robots’ faces Do Not Change.
Please stop having Brent Spiner, a human actor who got older, play a robot who will not get physically older.
His face changed. Combined with the makeup and yellow contact lenses, it’s horribly jarring and throws me out of my lovely #StarTrek experience.

This may just be me, ranting at humans being human. If it doesn’t bother you, Godspeed and have fun.
